Safeguarding in Rural Communities

National Safeguarding Week: 13th to 19th November 2023

Safeguarding in Rural Communities is the theme of a wide-ranging programme taking place across Mid and West Wales for National Safeguarding Week, commencing 13th November 2023. The programme has been co-ordinated by CWMPAS and CYSUR, the Regional Safeguarding Board, and this year has been designed in response to some of the issues that emerge in rural areas such as those found in Mid and West Wales.

A highlight of the week includes a launch conference for multi-agency practitioners, taking place at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. The focus will be on Mental Health within rural communities and will include presentations and workshops supporting this theme.

During the week, we will also host a variety of events including conferences and webinars that will seek to raise awareness and highlight issues that affect children and adults at risk. This includes a webinar being delivered by Dyfed Powys police, that covers Prevent, explaining what it is, the emerging ideologies which vulnerable people can become exposed to, and what they do to support people through Channel. In other webinars, we will also be introduced to the newly developed Violence against Women Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence strategy, delivering an awareness raising session covering the issues facing the farming community and a webinar on Child Sexual Abuse with staff from the Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse (CSA Centre).

The regional program will be supported by national events taking place across the whole of Wales. This includes the launch of a new training framework and strategy to accompany the standards that were launched last year by Social Care Wales and an event being hosted by the National Independent Safeguarding Board on a Thematic Analysis of Child Practice Reviews in Wales.
