What is exploitation?

Exploitation, in its widest definition, means getting someone to do something that they do not want to do for personal gain. Within the context of safeguarding, we use the term exploitation to encapsulate all situations whereby a person's vulnerability is exploited, resulting in some form of abuse or harm to be caused to them. There are many different forms of exploitation which can occur, affecting children and adults, but all forms of exploitation result in some kind of abuse or harm to be caused to a person, be it physical, sexual, emotional or financial.
